Freshers Weekend 2019
After Thursday night's shenanigans the group was certainly not fresh, they departed to Morrison's where it was stripped of its alcohol. The drive up was fairly uneventful, but it allowed people to recover for the night of fun and games ahead. It began with a classic game of cardboard where mysteriously a rule of 17 burpies was enacted much to everyone's dismay. Buffalo claimed two souls, they just would not learn despite every time they took a drink it resulted in them finishing it. Then somewhere the word baggo began to get chanted, and a bag of wine was presented. The bag in question just would not break, and was somehow almost empty before it broke. The drinking was then moved to the designated Ragé Cagè area where the games continued. After the games of Rage Cage, people began to disperse and head to bed to get ready for the day of paddling ahead.
We were awoken by the music of Kirsty and Iona in the morning, breakfast was had and kit was prepared and put on. John then fulfilled his childhood dream of being a captain and picking teams for the river. It began with a baptism of fire, we got on the river, split into the groups and headed down only for the freshers to get thrown back out their kayaks. It was carnage, boats everywhere and freshers littering the sides of the river. It was at this point the river tooketh away a fresher, poor Calum was far too hungover to deal with the rapids and had to leave the river and the trip entirely, a great loss. The rest of the river was jolly good fun, some more swims from the freshers on the way and when it came to the drop in the river, it was only a handfull of them who swam in the end.
The Saturday night revelry began with all of the freshers doing a bootie beer, which was followed by a glorious dinner of veggie chilli where John lost a battle to a salt shaker. Dick of the day was handed to Kirsty and Cinnamon, due to them using Ionas money to buy themselves coffee and one for Iona, a close second was Duncan who sat on Ionas favourite coffee mug, breaking it. The hero of the day was Ruari for volunteering to take poor Calum from the river and looking after him until his train.
After the dinner was had, games followed. Never have I ever being one of them, where Cinnamon was much targeted, and we learnt that there is nothing Ruari hasn't done. Ragé Cagè was then brought out, but was not in its designated Ragé Cagè area! A melon was then brought into the circle and chants of lob the melon were shouted, it all ended with Cinnamon throwing half a melon at the roof. Rita was the casualty of the night after a bottle of wine, three quarters of a bottle of vodka, and straight rum, she was never the same after the night. The Ragé Cagè was then moved to the designated area, and people slowly trickled into their beds leaving only the strong to continue the drinking.
The Sunday morning resulted in many people feeling very fragile as they were woken by Kirsty and Iona again, Rita had a hearty breakfast of paracetamol and water. Once everyone had packed away their kit it was time to clean up the mess that was created, pineapple and melon juice was cleaned from the hall floor and the magnitude of cans were taken to the bins. The group then loaded themselves with great effort into the transport only to have an even longer walk down to the river where the group split into their halves and headed down the river. The day's paddling was terrific fun, a significant less number of swims in the freshers, but a much more chaotic day for the veterans with Iona swimming and Matt losing his boat while trying to save Iona. While all this was going on Rita was sleeping to save herself in the back of Ruari's car. The day ended with dick of the day being Cinnamon after trying to put a boat in the minibus which resulted in breaking the door handle, and the much acclaimed hero of the day was Bequisha after a paddle broke in her group and she decided she would take the day off and allow a fresher to use her paddle.
All in all the weekend trip was a delight and enjoyed by all who survived, can't wait to see what else the club has to throw at the freshers this year.
