Not so North-East Weekend

Last weekend, the GUCC organised a freshers trip to Roy Bridge, Fort William. Apparently the trip was a little less smooth than usual... at least that’s what we heard as multiple members claimed that “this doesn’t usually happen.” The weekend began on Friday afternoon. We departed Glasgow at about 8 o’clock with the freshers fully equipped after only a few, minor problems (thankfully Tori found her boat in the end).

Ready to paddle, the final stop was the local Morrisons. After fully stocking up on the essentials (Morgans, amaretto and lots of cider) and a close attempt at the dark run by Cameron we were welcomed by a cold village hall in Roy Bridge. Finally, the drinking games commenced and the freshers were fully educated on the kayaking drinking etiquette. We were very privileged to witness first-hand the amazing drinking abilities of John M – until he couldn’t keep it down any longer. I’m pretty sure some freshers managed to outlast him…

The next morning, we were all delightfully awoken by my numerous dulcet alarm to accompany our ringing heads (you’re all very welcome.) After some obligatory organised fun, we split up into groups and got out onto the creek. The river was a tad emptier than expected, and everyone seemed to be very attracted to the rocks, especially poor Florence who became very well acquainted with the river Roy. Even after 3 (yes 3) pins from some of our more experienced club members, the second group dragged 2 hours behind leaving the first without food or clothes. Nothing a hot shower couldn’t fix! After a well needed nap we awoke to the delicious cooking from the older members of the club, and round 2 of the drinking games commenced! Hero of the day was awarded to John M for courageously wading through the river and unpinning the three people single handedly. ‘Dick of the day’ was justifiably awarded to Becky Nelson (myself) for trying to get everyone out of bed on time by setting 10 alarms!

The night progressed. Some of the highlights being the improvised game of baggo; getting to know some dangerous and interesting facts with a game of “never have I ever” and eventually passing out, praying to sleep the hangover away. After the first day on the water, everyone’s confidence and techniques had improved. We were able to work on our bracing with the higher water flow. Our knowledge also improved with a quick introduction to kayaking jargon. Group one got their sweet revenge on group two for making them wait for hours on the first day (yes let’s pretend it was on purpose) by missing the exit and going an extra mile down the river, taking on some grade 3+ with great fear. Three hours later, after 6 simultaneous swims, retrieving and hauling all 12 boats and paddles up near cliff faces we were reunited with the other group, the buses set off and we arrived home in Glasgow!
